Soldiers dug foxholes, to try to stay safe in battle in the Pacific. They were usually the only thing that could give them any protection.
The victory of Saipan and was important because the island gave the U.S bombers airstrips that they could use to launch attacks on Japan, like the Truk Islands, were the Japanese had their headquarters.
